Based on a buddy’s insidious recommendation, I decided to look into “Wicked City” as part of my classic anime kick. Little did I know that I’d gotten myself into a pretty deplorable flick.
Although I was, in fact, looking forward to this film for comparison to Kawajiri’s other work (“Ninja Scroll”, “VHD: Bloodlust”, etc.), it never develops any real momentum after falling flat real quick. The initial plot is an interesting concept and the action is well directed, but after the type of horror they endure, the characters aren’t relatable. Instead, they’re kind of pathetic, rendered helpless by their own perversions and even when the tables finally turn, the experience has long passed redemption.
Trust me when I say you can skip this one. It’s really not worth your time. There are plenty of much more imaginative films with which to fill your mind.
